Complete Guide to Choosing Leg Protection for Horses – Part 1

Brushing boots, tendon boots, fetlock boots

Why Protect Horse’s Legs

Horse’s legs are particularly vulnerable to knocks, strain and microtrauma, especially during intense training or competition. Protecting tendons, ligaments and joints is essential to prevent injuries, trauma, and overloads that could compromise the horse’s health and performance.

To meet these needs, there are different types of leg protection, each with a specific function:

  • Brushing boots
  • Tendon boots
  • Fetlock boots
  • Hoof boots
  • Bell boots
  • Work wraps
  • Stable wraps
  • Under bandages
  • Cooling boots

This guide explores the main characteristics of each product, explaining when and how to use them and how to choose the most suitable protection based on the horse’s activity.

The article is divided into three parts, published weekly. This is Part One, dedicated to brushing boots, tendon boots, and fetlock boots.

Brushing Boots: Full Protection for Front and Hind Legs

Brushing boots are essential for safeguarding tendons and soft tissues from impact and rubbing during work. They protect the inner and front part of the leg, where the superficial and deep flexor tendons are located.

Brushing Boot Features

  • Structure: Reinforced outer shell, neoprene or synthetic/natural sheepskin lining for comfort and impact absorption.
  • Closure: Two velcro straps with elastic for front boots, three for hind boots.
  • Fit: Must fit snugly without being too tight to avoid restricting circulation.
  • Care: Always remove sand and sweat after use and wash regularly to avoid skin irritation.

Tattini brushing boots (front and hind) are machine washable at 30°C and available in brown and black.

Tendon Boots: Targeted Protection for Front Flexor Tendons

Tendon boots are designed to protect the rear portion of the front leg, where the flexor tendons are most exposed to strikes and impact.

Tattini Tendon Boot Types

  1. Semi-rigid shell model: Neoprene-lined with double elastic straps and hooks.
  2. Preformed PU shell model: Offers maximum protection and support while maintaining freedom of movement.

Both models are available in full and cob sizes, machine washable, and designed to offer safety without compromising performance.

Fetlock Boots: Protection for the Hind Fetlock Joint

Fetlock boots protect one of the most delicate areas of the hind limb: the fetlock, often subject to interference during jumping, changes of direction, or fast galloping.

Types of Fetlock Boots

  • Classic fetlock boots: Protect only the inner part of the fetlock, leaving the rear open.
  • Shell-type fetlock boots: Designed for show jumping, they support optimal performance during competition.

It is essential to place them correctly to prevent chafing and ensure maximum comfort during activity.

End of Part One

We have reviewed the features and differences between brushing boots, tendon boots, and fetlock boots — three fundamental protections for a horse’s leg health. In Part Two of the guide, we will talk about hoof boots, bell boots, and work wraps, analyzing their functions and the criteria for making the right choice.
